U.S. Department of Energy plans to deploy 1,000 fuel cell buses at hydrogen hub in California

Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the signing of a $12.6 billion agreement that includes up to $1.2 billion in DOE funding and $11.4 billion in public and private matching funds to accelerate clean hydrogen projects throughout California. A plan to deploy more than 1,000 fuel cell buses is already in place as part of the programme.

Egypt's hydrogen-powered skyscraper to begin construction next year

Recently, a Saudi-controlled real estate company plans to build a hydrogen-powered skyscraper in the Egyptian capital. The project is scheduled to begin construction next year. It will be the first net-zero carbon building in the MENA region, with the building's in-built solar panels generating 25 per cent of the electricity consumed, with the rest being generated by clean hydrogen.

Siemens Energy signs contract for large-scale green hydrogen project in Germany

Siemens Energy recently signed a contract with German energy company EWE to supply a 280 MW electrolyser system. The new hydrogen plant, located in Emden, Germany, is expected to be operational in 2027. Upon commissioning, the plant will be able to produce up to 26,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for several industrial applications in the region.

Italian Classification Society approves Saipem subsea hydrogen pipeline programme

The Italian Classification Society has issued an Approval-in-Principle (AiP) and a technical qualification for the hydrogen pipeline safety methodology for Saipem's subsea hydrogen pipeline programme.Saipem has developed a programme to assess the performance of hydrogen pipelines, which will allow the company to determine the compatibility of the pipelines during the planning and operational phases. Although hydrogen can be transported through modified or new pipelines, there is a risk that the material will weaken. The certification will enable Saipem to qualify the performance of materials used in the construction of subsea hydrogen pipelines. It is expected to pave the way for further qualification processes and scalable procedures.

Hydrogen power units trialled at Schiphol Airport

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is testing a new hydrogen facility to power aircraft on the tarmac, in another move aimed at reducing carbon emissions from airport operations. Schiphol says the hydrogen GPU (ground power unit) will be used to power and light the cockpits of Royal Dutch City Short-haul Airlines' aircraft on the tarmac. Schiphol described the project as a ‘world first’, adding that it was co-funded by the European Commission through the TULIPS partnership.|

Uniper offtakes Nordic Hydrogen to help Germany's energy transition

Recently, Uniper agreed to offtake hydrogen from Norway's Norwegian Hydrogen and Provaris in a Nordic export project. According to a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the three companies aim to strengthen the development of the hydrogen supply chain from the Nordics to the import centres in North West Europe, and Norwegian Hydrogen's CEO, Jens Berge, said that Uniper's offtake of hydrogen will better support the development of the joint project. This new agreement is positive for all three parties involved and I am confident that it will lead to strong and tangible results,’ said Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen.

07

Germany to boost development of southern hydrogen corridor

Recently, the German government announced that it will promote the development and construction of the ‘Southern Hydrogen Corridor’, which is one of the five large-scale ‘Hydrogen Corridor’ projects currently being planned in Europe. According to the plan, Germany will be through a dedicated pipeline, in North Africa through the wind or solar energy production of hydrogen through Italy and Austria to the southern part of Germany, in order to meet the growing local demand for hydrogen energy.
